ye desh hai veer javaanoN ka

August 15th, 2010

Happy Independence day!

From the movie Naya Daur, Here’s a beautiful song by Sahir to celebrate this day:

ye desh hai veer javaanoN ka albeloN ka mastaanoN ka
is desh ka yaaroN, is desh kaa yaaroN kyaa kahnaa
ye desh hai duniyaa ka gehnaa

yahaaN chauRii chhaatii veeroN ki
yahaaN bholi shakleiN heeroN ki
yahaaN gaate haiN raaNjhe, yahaaN gaate haiN raaNjhe masti meiN
masti meiN jhuumeiN bastii meiN

peRoN meiN bahaareN jhuuloN ki
raahoN meiN kataareiN phooloN ki
yahaaN haNstaa hai saawan, yahaaN haNstaa hai saawan baaloN meiN
khilatii hai kaliyaaN gaaloN meiN

kahiiN daNgal shoKh javaanoN ke
kahiiN kartab teer kamaanoN ke
yahaan nit nit mele! yahaaN nit nit mele sajte haiN
nit Dhol aur taashe bajte haiN

dilbar ke liye dildaar haiN ham
dushman ke liye talvaar haiN ham
maidaaN meiN agar ham! maidaaN meiN agar ham Dat jaayeiN
mushkil hai ki peechhe haT jaayeiN!

tu hindu banega na musalmaan banega

August 13th, 2010

A lovely song, beautifully sung by Rafi from the movie Dhool ka Phool (1959).  Fitting in with my nationalistic posts in the last week or so, this is a must for our secular India.

tu hindu banega na musalmaan banega
insaan ki aulaad hai insaan banega

qudrat ne to banaai thi ek hi duniyaa
hamne use hindu aur musalmaan banaayaa
tuu sabke liye aman ka paiGhaam banega
insaan ki aulaad hai, insaan banega

ye deen ye eemaan dharam bechane vaale
dhan-daulat  ke bhookhe vatan bechane vaale
tu inake liye maut ka ailaan banega
insaan ki aulaad hai insaan banega

saathi haath baRhaanaa

August 12th, 2010

Another nationalistic song by Sahir, this one from the movie Naya Daur (1957), sung by Rafi and Asha with music by OP Nayyar.

saathi haath baRhaanaa, saathi haath baRhaanaa
ek akela thak jaayega, mil kar bojh uThaanaa
saathi haath baRhaanaa…

ham mehnatvaaloN ne jab bhi milkar qadam baDhaayaa
saagar ne rastaa chhoRaa, parbat ne sheesh jhukaayaa
faulaadii haiN seene apne, faulaadii haiN baaheiN
ham chaaheiN to paida kardeiN, chaTTaanoN meiN raaheiN
saathi haath baRhaanaa….

mehnat apnii lekh kii rekhaa mehnat se kyaa Darnaa
kal GhairoN ki Khaatir ki ab apnii Khaatir karnaa
apnaa dukh bhi ek hai saathi apna sukh bhi ek
apni manzil sach ki manzil apna rastaa nek
saathii haath baRhaanaa….

ek se ek mile to katraa ban jaataa hai dariyaa
ek se ek mile to zarraa ban jaataa hai sehraa
ek se ek mile to raaii ban saktii hai parbat
ek se ek mile to insaaN bas meiN kar le qismat
saathi haath baRhaanaa …

maaTii se ham laal nikaaleiN, moti laayeiN jal se
jo kuchh is duniyaa meiN banaa hai banaa hamaare bal se
kab tak mehnat ke pairoN meiN ye dault ki zanjeereiN
haath baRhaakar chheen lo apne sapnoN ki tasveereN

saathi haath baRhaanaa….

ye mahaloN ye taKhtoN ye taajoN ki duniya

August 10th, 2010

Going over the list of posted songs and nazms, I was surprised to see I hadn’t posted this song yet on this site.  This happens to be one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite movies ever, Pyaasa (Guru Dutt).  The song is simply amazing!  I think it fits in nicely with my recent posts regarding patriotic/nationalist songs by Sahir.

Enjoy the song, a video, courtesy the amazing posters at youtube, is posted below as well.

ye mahloN, ye taKhtoN, ye taajoN ki duniya
ye insaaN ke dushman, samaajoN ki duniya
ye daulat ke bhuukhe, rivaajoN ki duniyaa
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

har ik jism ghaayal, har ik ruuh pyaasii
nigaahoN me uljhan, diloN meiN udaasi
ye duniyaa hai yaa aalam-e-badhavaasii
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

jahaaN ik khilona hai insaaN ki hastii
ye bastii hai murda-parastoN ki bastii
yahaaN par to jeevan se hai maut sastii
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

javaani bhaTaktii hai bezaar bankar
javaaN jism sajate haiN baazaar bankar
jahaaN pyaar hota hai vyopaar bankar
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

ye duniyaa jahaaN aadmi kuchh nahiiN hai
vafaa kuchh nahiiN, dostii kuchh nahiiN hai
jahaaN pyaar ki qadr hi kuchh nahiiN hai
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

jalaa do ise  phuuNk DaaloN ye duniyaa
jalaa do jalaa do
jalaa do ise phuuNk DaaloN ye duniyaa
mere saamne se haTaa lo ye duniyaa
tumhaari hai tum hi sambhaalo ye duniyaa
ye duniyaa agar mil bhi jaaye to kyaa hai

cheen-o-arab hamaaraa

August 8th, 2010

Today’s song is “cheen-o-arab hamaaraa” from the movie Phir Subah Hogi.   I know this is not a “patriotic” song per say, but being a nice parody on Iqbal’s “taraana-e-milli” and his “taraana-e-Hind”, I thought I might as well post it while waiting for Independence day 2010.

Here’s an interesting comment by “Bismil” originally posted in RMIM (rec.music.indian.misc)

Bismil@Delphi comments :-

This song is a very very clever take-off of Iqbal’s Tarana-e-milli. Just to show what a clever parody this is of Iqbal, the first verse of Taraanaa-e-milli goes as follows:

Chin-o-arab hamaara
hindostaan hamaara
muslim hai hum, vatan hai saara jahaan hamaara

The real beauty of the first verse is that it turns around Iqbal’s arguably communaland national hymn into a cry of of the oppressed and anguished that is neither communal nor chauvinist nor nationalist, but  internationalist. Parts are also recognizable as being borrowed from Iqbal’s hymn of INDIAN nationalism, “Taraana-e-Hind”. Some of the references are easily identifiable, especially to Indians who know
“saare jahaan se achha”.

e.g. ae aab-e-rud-e-Ganga,
voh din yaad hai tujhko
utra tere kinaare jab kaarwaan hamaara?

To which the parody goes “sarkon pe ghoomta hai ab kaarwaan hamaara” or the final line to “saare jahaan” which most people don’t know, goes as follows: “iqbal, koyi mehrum apna nahin jahaan mein, maa’lum kya kisi ko, dard-e-nihaan hamaara” Here, of course, it is “milti nahin majoori, ma’lum kya kisi ko dard-e-nihaan hamaara”

or, from taraana-e-milli, the line goes:

– ae gulistaan-e-andalus, voh din yaad hai tujh ko
tha teri daliyon mein jab aashiyaan hamaara?

contrast that with “footpaath bambai ke hai aashiyaan hamaara”. Overall, it seems that the song takes a somewhat dim view of the lofty and grandiose nationalism of Iqbal by presenting some home-truths about real present day life.

Here are the lyrics:
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa, hindostaaN hamaaraa
rahne ko ghar nahiiN hai, saaraa jahaaN hamaaraa
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa …

kholii bhi chhin gayi hai, bencheN bhii chhin gaiiN haiN
saRakoN pe ghumtaa hai, ab kaarvaaN hamaaraa
jebeN haiN apani khaali, kyoN detaa varnaa gaali
vo santari hamaaraa, vo paasabaaN hamaaraa
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa…

jitani bhi bilDiNgeN thiiN, seThoN ne baaNT lii haiN
fuTpaath bambaii ke haiN aashiyaaN hamaaraa
sone ko ham kalandar, aate haiN borii bandar
har ek kholii yahaaN hai raazadaaN hamaaraa
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa….

Taaliim hai adhuri, miltii nahiiN majuurii
maaluum kya kisiko, dard-e-nihaaN hamaaraa
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa…

patlaa hai haal apnaa, lekin lahuu hai gaaRaa
phaulaad se banaa hai, har naujavaaN hamaaraa
mil-jul ke is vatan ko, aisaa sajaayeiNge ham
hairat se muNh takegaa, saaraa jahaaN hamaaraa
cheen-o-arab hamaaraa….

For comparison purposes, I’d like to include Iqbal’s  “taraan-e-Hind” here.  So here it is:

Sare Jahan se achachha Hindustan hamara,
hum bulbulen hainiski yeh gulistan hamara!

Ghurbat men hon agar ham rehta hai dil watan men,
Samjho wahin hamen bhi dil ho jahan hamara!

Parbat woh sab se uncha hamsaya aasmaan ka,
woh santari hamara, woh pasban hamara!

Godi men khelti hain iski hazaron nadiyan,
Gulshan hai jinke dam se rashke jinan hamara

Aiy ab-e-rood-i-ganga ! woh din hain yaad tujhko,
utra tere kinare jab karavan hamara!

Mazhab nahin sikhata apas men bair rakhna
Hindi hain ham watan hai Hindustan hamara!

Yunan-o-misr-o-Roma sab mit gaye jahan se,
ab tak magar hai baqi nam-o-nishaan hamara!

Kuchh bat hai ki hasti mitthi nahin hamari,
sadiyon raha hai dushman daur-i-zaman hamara

Iqbal! koi mehram apna nahin jahan men
Ma'loom kya kisi ko dard-i-nihan hamara!
