It’s a lovely poem; only that Charan Das has rendered it badly in Gumrah, yikes.

Charan Das, are you sure it’s not Mahendra Kapoor who sang it in Gumrah?

Mahendra Kapoor = Charan Das; he falls at anyone’s feet and hence the name. (courtesy: RMIM)

Charan Das - LoL
There is a post that I wrote on this nazm, that some of you may be interested in.
And, as a Sahir fan myself, a few other posts, including the translation of Parkash Pandit’s introduction to Sahir and his poetry:

I don’t agree with you there….I think it was rendered very well by “Charan Das” :p But yes…I still don’t understand why Rafi wasn’t made to sing this one. But still..hands down the best romantic-sad song ever used in a Hindi movie.

A small correction is in order: In the original version, that Sahir wrote, before he de-persianized a bit, the line goes like this
Woh afasna jise taqmeem taq lana na ho mumkeen,
I believe there were a couple of more changes that Sahir made for the movie. Someone stole my book of Sahir’s poetry and I can’t cofirm.
Also, music director Ravi and Rafi had some quarrels and that is the reason Rafi did not get to sing it!
