ufaq ke dareeche se kirnoN ne jhaaNkaa
fazaa tan gayii, raaste muskuraaye
simatne lagii narm kuhre kii chaadar
jawaaN shaaKhsaaroN ne ghooNghaT uThaaye

parindoN kii aawaaz se khet choNke
pur-asraar lai meiN rahaT gungunaayee
haseeN shabnam-aalood pagdanDiiyoN se
paRne lage sabz peRoN ke saaye

woh door ek Teele pe aaNchal saa jhalkaa
tasawwur meiN laakhoN diye jhilmilaaye

rahaT = a wheel to draw water from the well

ahd-e-gumgashtaa kii tasveer dikhaatii kyoN ho?
ek aawaara-e-manzil ko sataatii kyoN ho?
vo hasiiN ahd jo sharmindaa-e-iifaa na huaa
us hasiiN ahd ka mafhoom jataatii kyoN ho?
zindagii sho’lah-e-bebaak banaalo apni
Khud ko Khakistar-e-Khaamosh banaatii kyoN ho?
maiN tasawwuf ke maraahil ka nahiiN houN qaa’il
meri tasveer pe tum phool chaRaatii kyoN ho?

Kaun kahtaa hai k aaheiN haiN masaa’ib ka ilaaj
jaan ko apnii ‘abas rog lagaatii kyoN ho?
ek sarkash se muhabbat ki tamannaa rakh kar
Khud ko aa’iin ke phandoN meiN phaNsaatii kyoN ho?

maiN samajhtaa houN taqaddus ko tamaddun ka fareb
tum rasoomaat ko eemaan banaati kyoN ho?
jab tumheiN mujh se zyadaa hai zamaane ka khayaal
phir mirii yaad meiN yuuN ashk bahaatii kyoN ho?

tum meiN himmat hai to duniyaa se baghaawat kar lo
varnaa maaN-baap jahaaN kahte haiN shaadi kar lo

ahd-e-gumgashtaa = the lost time, past
aawaara-e-manzil = one who is separated from his goal, his destination
ahd = time or promise
sharmindah-e-iifaa = ashamed of being satisfied, fulfilling
mafhoom = meaning, content, sense
sho’lah-e-bebaak = fearless flame
Khaakistar-e-Khaamosh = silent ashes
tasawwuf = mysticism, contemplation
maraahil = a place of abode, a station, journey
qaa’il (hona) = to be convinced of, to consent, to acknowledge, to yield
masaa’ib = calamities, afflictions
‘abas = absurdly, or in vain or uselessly
sarkash = rebellious
aa’iin = law, enacted code (by princes)
taqaddus = holiness, purity
tamaddun = culture
rasoomaat = customs
